About the ii-V-I

The ii-V-I progression is the backbone of jazz harmony. In the key of C major, it is Dm7 – G7 – Cmaj7. In C minor, it becomes Dm7b5 – G7alt – Cm(maj7).

Practising ii-V-I progressions in all 12 keys builds the harmonic vocabulary that every jazz improviser needs. Work through them slowly at first, then gradually increase tempo. Try them through the circle of fourths for the classic jazz practice pattern.
